Become a Justice of the Peace (Qualified) - Queensland

Justices of the Peace are well respected members of their community. They play an important role in Queensland’s legal system and perform a range of judicial and administrative functions.

Justices of the Peace (Qualified) have the ability to:
  • witness signatures on documents
  • certify true copies of documents
  • issue search warrants
  • remand defendants (returning defendants to custody until their case can be heard)
  • adjourn court hearings
  • grant bail

The Academy of Celebrancy Australia® in conjunction with the QJA (Queensland Justices Association) conducts training courses throughout the year for those who wish to become a Justice of the Peace (Qualified) in Queensland.

All courses are extremely thorough, fun, and cover all the requirements of knowledge to become a JP in Queensland. The training course helps better prepare you for the open book exam that follows straight after. The courses are 24 hours in duration, and are taught by experienced JP's who have been servicing the community for many years. All of our presenters are experienced JP’s with extensive educational backgrounds.

Once the training course is completed, all candidates will be required to sit an open book exam, which is administered by the Department of Justice and Attorney General. An 80% pass rate is required. Once you have received a letter from the department confirming the result, an application for appointment is completed through your local member of parliament and you will be sworn in at your local courthouse.

You can become a JP if you are:

  • an Australian citizen by birth, descent or grant
  • at least 18 years old
  • of good character
  • registered on the State electoral roll

Note: If you have any history of criminal or traffic offences (e.g. speeding fines), you must disclose them on your application form, no matter how long ago the incidents occurred. They will be considered by the Registrar of Justices of the Peace and Commissioners for Declarations when your suitability is assessed.

If you are in Queensland and would like to become a JP then please contact the Justice Department on (07) 3239 6098 to assess your eligibility in becoming a JP. The course fee is $295 and all students receive 1 year of FREE Queensland Justices Association (the largest association for Justices of the Peace in QLD) associate membership valued at $49.20.

This course runs for 3 full days, plus the mandatory open book exam is usually scheduled within 1 week from the course finishing. To enrol, simply email us with your student number.
